Oh, The Places You'll Go!

Pregnant with our first child, we were given two baby showers. Both shower themes encouraged guests to stock our son’s nursery with their favorite children’s books. As you can imagine we received countless Dr. Seuss books, many that my husband and I have fond memories of as young children. We decided to make it a point to recreate those memories by reading each night to our son in utero. One in particular that struck me as not only a great rhyme, but filled with a valuable life lesson is “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”

After researching the book further, I discovered Dr. Seuss actually wrote this for a graduation speech and published it just one year before his death. Within the book he addresses the “Great Balancing Act” of life itself, full of ups and downs, while “encouraging us to find the success that lies within us.”

When I think of my life coaching profession, in a fun whimsical way, this book expresses my desire for all of my clients. To coach them through the ebbs and flows of life, ultimately finding their level of optimal performance.

The story begins:

Congratulations!

Today is your day.

You’re off to Great Places!

You’re off and away!

You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself

any direction you choose.

You’re on your own. And you know what you know.

And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go…

Except when you don’t.

Because, sometimes, you won’t…

And when you’re in a Slump,

you’re not in for much fun.

Un-slumping yourself

Is not easily done.

The story goes on to describe the dark and unmarked territory you may go down. Confused at which turn to take you may find yourself in “The Waiting Place…” Until finally you determine, “That’s not for you! Somehow you’ll escape…”

As a coach, my job is to prepare you for both life’s ups and downs. To give you the tools to soar to new heights and “un-slump yourself” when you find yourself in a Lurch. The tools will become such an engrained part of your daily life that finding the “success that lies within” will be your only way of existence. Of course, anything that sounds this good does take practice. I will show you exactly how to make the most out of every practice.

And will you succeed?

Yes! You will, indeed!
